Waltham, Mass. – The Mercyhurst College men's hockey team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end Saturday evening, as the Bentley Falcons soared past the Lakers, 3-1, in an Atlantic Hockey match-up at the Ryan Skating Arena. The Lakers fall to 17-14-3 overall and 15-8-3 in conference play while the Falcons improve to 17-14-1 on the season and 15-10-1 in AHA action.
After falling behind on a goal by Kane Osmar midway through the first period, the Lakers came back to tie the game early in the second. Freshman
Phil Ginand evened the score at one with his 14
th lamplighter of the season thanks to a couple of assists from junior
Chris Risi and sophomore
Mike Gurtler at 5:55.
However, despite a solid outing from sophomore
Ryan Zapolski, who made 34 of his 37 saves through the first two periods of play, Bentley rallied in the third. The Falcons scored two goals less than five minutes apart to seal their 17
th win of the season and stay three points ahead of fifth place Canisius in the AHA standings. Dain Prewitt netted the eventual game-winner at 2:31 while Jeff Gumaer provided an insurance marker on the power-play at the 6:50 mark.
Mercyhurst held shot advantages of 16-13 in the first period and 10-5 in the third, but were stifled by the play of Kyle Rank and a 35-save performance. Bentley finished the game with a 40-36 edge in shots.
Both teams converted on the power-play, with Mercyhurst finishing 1-for-6 and Bentley at 1-for-5.
The Lakers wrap up the regular season this weekend with a home-and-home series against Canisius on Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28. Mercyhurst will play in Buffalo on Friday before returning to the Mercyhurst Ice Center for senior day on Saturday.
