BUFFALO, N.Y. - Cory Conacher scored the game-deciding goal on a late penalty shot, and Canisius completed the home-and-home sweep of the Mercyhurst College men's hockey team with a 4-3 victory Saturday evening at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.
Conacher lifted the Golden Griffins to their second-straight win and snubbed out a late Mercyhurst rally when he converted the one-on-one opportunity with 5:36 to play.
The Lakers, who fall to 2-7-1 on the season and 2-3-1 in Atlantic Hockey action, battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game early in the third period.
With under two minutes to play in the second, junior
Steve Cameron cut the deficit to one when he beat Dan Morrison for his first of the evening at 18:24. Freshman
Paul Chiasson then added his third of the season to tie the game just 2:36 into the third. Following a score from Canisius 24 seconds later, Cameron evened the game on the power play at 6:36.
Sophomore
Max Strang made his second-career start in goal, recording 29 saves over a span of 59 minutes and eight seconds.
Canisius outshot Mercyhurst 33-29, including 9-8 in the first period when the Golden Griffins staked a 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals just 22 seconds apart at 17:30 and 17:52.
Both teams converted on the power play, with Canisius going 1-for-5 and Mercyhurst finishing at 1-for-6.
The Lakers return home this weekend to host AHA foe RIT on Friday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 14. Both games are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
