WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- West Chester limited Mercyhurst to just 198 yards of total offense while rolling to 458 of their own in a 45-13 victory over the Lakers in both teams' regular-season finale.
Steve Miller posted two touchdown catches as a part of a 24-point second quarter that helped West Chester to a 31-7 halftime advantage. The Golden Rams opened the scoring with a 1-yard run by D'Andre Webb then added two fourth-quarter scores on a Lee Hopkins 1-yard run and a 46-yard strike from Jared Jorgensen to Dan DePalma.
Miller and DePalma each finished with five catches, with DePalma posting a game-high 110 yards receiving.
Mercyhurst scored in the final minutes of the first half on a 22-yard pass from
Joe Laffey to
Max Khuri and added its only other score with 1:09 left in the game on a 12-yard pass from backup quarterback
Travis Rearick to
Garrett Kensy.
Laffey and Rearick combined for 14 completions in 26 attempts and 148 yards while throwing two interceptions. The ground game faced a stifling West Chester defense that held the Lakers to just 50 yards.
Khuri led the Lakers receiving unit with five catches for 79 yards and a touchdown to finish as the team's leader in touchdown receptions. Kensy added 3-for-23 and score while
Josh Szeluga,
Ben Jennings and
Gerald Anderson each posted two catches.
Defensively, the Lakers
Bryan Boyce collected a game-high 10 tackles and
Tim Herbener added nine stops, including two tackles for loss and a sack.
Fred Hale contributed five tackles, three for loss, including two sacks.
With the crossover win, WCU improves to 7-4 overall after finishing 5-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division. The loss drops Mercyhurst to 4-7 overall, 3-4 in the PSAC West.
