No. 1 Lakers Bounce Back, Down Wayne State, 3-1

DETROIT, Mich. – The top-ranked Mercyhurst College women's hockey team bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 3-1 victory over College Hockey America foe Wayne State on Friday evening at the City Sports Arena. With the win, the Lakers improve to 8-1-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in league play.

Juniors Vicki Bendus and Jesse Scanzano led the offense with a goal and an assist each while sophomore Bailey Bram netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season, the game-winner, to extend her goal-scoring streak to six games.

Mercyhurst did most of its damage in the first period, with Scanzano and Bram scoring back-to-back within a three minute and 25 second span. Scanzano gave the Lakers a 1-0 advantage when she took a pass from classmate Cassea Schols and buried it past netminder Lindsey Park at 9:30. At 12:55, Bram made it a 2-0 game thanks to a single-assist from junior Ashley Cockell.

Following a scoreless second period, both teams found the back of the net to close out the game. Bendus put the icing on the cake for the Lakers when she scored her seventh goal of the season at the 9:38 mark. Wayne State, meanwhile, broke up the shutout bid with Jill Szandzik's lamplighter with 1:39 remaining.

Sophomore Hillary Pattenden improved to 8-1-0 with 12 saves. Mercyhurst outshot Wayne State 36-13, with edges of 15-4 in the first and 13-5 in the second, and converted 1-for-5 on the power play. The Warriors finished 0-for-7 with the extra skater.

Mercyhurst and Wayne State close out the two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 7, with a 2 p.m. contest at the City Sports Arena.
