Lakers Down Holy Cross, 4-1; Sweep Series

ERIE, Pa. – Junior Brandon Coccimiglio scored two goals and added an assist as the Mercyhurst College men's hockey team completed the two-game sweep of Holy Cross with a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers improve to 4-9-1 on the season and 4-5-1 in the Atlantic Hockey standings while Holy Cross falls to 3-7-2 overall and 3-5-2 in league play.

Coccimiglio improved his team-leading point total to 13 with his third multipoint game of the season. He now has six goals and seven assists through 14 games.

Despite getting outshot 33-26, the Lakers made the most of their attempts as they swept an opponent for the first time this season and won consecutive games since winning five in a row last season.

Mercyhurst went 2-for-2 on its first shots of the first and second periods. Junior Scott Pitt gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead when he took a feed from classmate Mike Gurtler and beat Holy Cross netminder Thomas Tysowsky just 1:13 into the frame.

After a goal from junior Jeff Terminesi to close out the first, Coccimiglio nailed the team's opening shot of the second, scoring on an unassisted play after 7:32 elapsed in the frame. He would later add his second on a power play in the third.

Junior Ryan Zapolski was sharp in goal, turning aside 32 shots while flirting with a shutout for nearly 60 minutes. Holy Cross, however, broke up his bid for a fifth career doughnut when Erik Vos found the back on the net with 35 seconds remaining in the game.

In addition to his 32 stops, Zapolski also helped hold Holy Cross scoreless on five power-play attempts. Mercyhurst finished the game 1-for-6.

The Lakers hit the road next weekend as they take on American International on Friday, Nov. 27 and Saturday, Nov. 28 in West Springfield, Mass. Both games are set for 7:05 p.m. starts.
