RIT Downs Lakers 3-2, Sweeps Series

ERIE, Pa. – Adam Hartley's power-play goal with less than 13 minutes remaining in the third lifted RIT to a 3-2 victory over the Mercyhurst College men's hockey team Saturday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers, who now have suffered three-straight one-goal defeats in their four-game losing streak, fall to 2-9-1 on the season and 2-5-1 in Atlantic Hockey play.

RIT extended its winning streak to six games when Hartley deflected in a shot off his skate from Friday-night hero Alan Mazur at the 7:34 mark. Mazur accounted for both scores in a 2-1 win in game one of the series.

Mercyhurst took an early 1-0 lead in the first period as senior Nick Vandenbeld beat RIT goaltender Jared DeMichiel with a backhander from the top of the right circle at 3:25.

RIT countered the score with two of its own over the next two periods. The Tigers tied the game in the second as Andrew Favot found the back of the net at 14:50 while Chris Saracino produced a 2-1 lead just 1:38 into the third.

Less than three minutes later, senior Cody Collins evened the slate with his second of the series at 4:35.

Despite suffering the loss, junior Ryan Zapolski made a season-high 40 saves, including 18 in the first period. DeMichiel stopped 23 as RIT outshot Mercyhurst 43-25.

Both teams combined for 12 power-play opportunities in the game, with RIT finishing at 1-for-7 and Mercyhurst at 0-for-5.

Mercyhurst stays at home next weekend as Holy Cross visits the Mercyhurst Ice Center for a two-game series on Friday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21.
