ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 1 /1 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team completed its third series sweep of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Cornell by the score of 4-1 at James Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y. With the win, the Lakers move to 6-0-0 for the first time in program history.
Three players recorded at least two or more points. Junior Jesse Scanzano and sophomore Bailey Bram each recorded a goal and two assists while junior Ashley Cockell scored once and added a helper.
After skating to a scoreless tie in the first period, Mercyhurst took control with three goals over the next 25 minutes.
Cockell provided the Lakers with a 1-0 lead when she took a pass from Scanzano from behind the net and one-timed it to the far post at 17:12. The goal, which was the only score of the frame, marked the sixth-straight time this season the Lakers scored first.
Mercyhurst pushed its lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals two minutes and 45 seconds apart in the third. Bram made it 2-0 off an assist from Scanzano with just 22 seconds elapsed while sophomore Jess Jones deflected in a pass from freshman Stephanie DeSutter to stretch it to 3-0 at 16:53.
Both teams exchanged scores to close out the game, with Cornell getting on the board courtesy of Karlee Overguard at 15:53 and Scanzano striking at 12:08.
Sophomore Hillary Pattenden moved to 6-0 on the season with 21 saves. Mercyhurst, which was held to 19 shots for just the fourth time in program history on Friday, outshot Cornell 27-22. Both teams had four power-play opportunities, with Cornell going 1-for-4 and Mercyhurst at 0-for-4.
Mercyhurst returns home this weekend to host Minnesota Duluth in a two-game series, beginning on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
