WEST POINT, N.Y. – For the first time in over 30 meetings, the Mercyhurst College men's hockey team and Army could not decide a winner as both teams skated to a 3-3 tie in front of a crowd of nearly 1,500 on Saturday evening in West Point, N.Y.
Playing for the 31st time since the inaugural meeting in 2000, the Lakers (0-4-1, 0-0-1 AHA) saw an opportunity to take a 22-9-0 edge in the all-time series disappear when Cody Omiluski tied the game with less than four minutes remaining in regulation.
In a seesaw battle, both teams exchanged leads through the entire game, with Mercyhurst jumping out to a 1-0 advantage on sophomore
Phil Ginand's first goal of the season at the 9:54 mark of the first period.
Army answered back with the next two goals. Danny Colvin evened the game at 1-1 just 78 seconds later at 11:12, while Bryant Skarda pushed the Black Knights out in front, 2-1, when he opened the third period at 1:20.
Mercyhurst took a page out of Army's book with consecutive goals, beginning with junior
Steve Cameron's second of the season at 2:08. Freshman
Grant Blakey followed suit with his first collegiate marker at 5:56, giving Mercyhurst a 3-2 advantage leading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Both goaltenders registered 30-plus saves each in the contest. Junior
Ryan Zapolski (0-4-1) recorded 31 while Army netminder Jay Clark made 37. The Lakers held a 40-34 edge shots, including a 6-0 margin in overtime. Neither team found the back of the net on the power play, with Mercyhurst at 0-for-7 and Army at 0-for-6.
The Lakers and Black Knights meet again on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 2:05 p.m. to close out the two-game series in West Point, N.Y.
