Millersville Scores Three Late to Stun Lakers, 3-2

ERIE, Pa. – No. 8 Millersville scored three goals within an 11-minute span to overcome a 2-0 deficit and defeat the eighth-ranked Mercyhurst College field hockey team, 3-2, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover on Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Megan Richards and sophomore Serena Slattery scored for the Lakers, who fall to 8-6 on the season.

Mercyhurst saw its 2-0 lead disappear late in the second half as three different Marauders found the back of the cage. Meredith Dolinger got Millersville on the board when she connected off a penalty corner assist from Krista Bupp at 52:52, while Emily Woodland knocked home a loose ball on the crease to tie the game at 57:22. Melissa McCarthy provided the game-clinching score just a little over five minutes later on an unassisted play at 62:40.
Millersville outshot the Lakers 18-10, including a 12-7 edge in the first half, but was shutout for a majority of the game. The Laker defense shined in the opening stanza as it forced seven shots wide while sophomore Ashley Wiskup stopped the other five. She finished the game with seven saves.
As the defense did its job, the offense put the Lakers out in front with a pair of early goals. Richards added her fourth of the season – and second in as many games – by knocking in a rebound that trickled underneath goalkeeper at 12:01. Slattery extended the score to 2-0 when she connected off a penalty-corner assist from senior Kelsie Weber at 23:15.
Mercyhurst returns to action this Tuesday, Oct. 21, when the Lakers host conference foe Slippery Rock at 4 p.m.
