Megan Richards scored her second goal of the season as the eighth-ranked Mercyhurst College field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision against Kutztown Saturday afternoon at Tullio Field. The Lakers, who now have lost three straight, fall to 6-5 on the season while Kutztown snaps a four-game losing skid to improve to 8-6.
Richards got the Lakers on the board after the Golden Bears built a 3-0 advantage leading into halftime. With less than two minutes elapsed in the second, Richards beat Kutztown's Emily Falko with an unassisted strike at 36:43.
Kutztown shook off the score just a few minutes later as Courtney Zook pushed the lead back to three at 39:47. Brooke Mathews capped off the game with the Golden Bears' fifth goal at 59:38.
Sophomore
Ashley Wiskup suffered the loss despite recording 16 saves. Kutztown outshot the Lakers 26-14 and held an 8-5 edge in penalty corners.
Mercyhurst returns to conference play this week as the Lakers take on Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division opponent Mansfield on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 4 p.m.
