West Point, N.Y. – The Mercyhurst College men's hockey team saw its five-game winning streak over Army come to an end Friday evening as the Black Knights scored back-to-back goals in the second period to overcome a 1-0 deficit and hand the Lakers a 2-1 setback at the Tate Rink in West Point, N.Y. The Lakers, who fall to 7-11-2 overall and 5-5-2 in Atlantic Hockey play, hadn't lost to Army since the 2006-07 season when the Black Knights skated to a 2-1 home victory.
Mercyhurst jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when sophomore
Scott Pitt connected off a pass from classmate
Steve Cameron just seconds after being released from the penalty box. The Lakers controlled the first period, outshooting the Black Knights, 15-9, while keeping them scoreless on two extra-man chances.
However, Army would catch a break in the second with the Lakers being hit with five penalties. Cody Omilusik took full advantage of one of those miscues when he kick-started a two-goal rally with a power-play score just 20 seconds into the frame. Owen Meyer followed suit with the eventual game-winner less than five minutes later on an even-strength opportunity.
The two goals provided all the offense the Black Knights needed as they relied on the goaltending of Jay Clark through the rest of the game. Clark stopped a game-high 35 shots, including 15 in the third period to keep the score intact. Sophomore
Ryan Zapolski suffered just his second loss of the season with 27 saves made in net.
Mercyhurst finished the game with a 36-29 edge in shots, but was held scoreless on four extra-man chances. Army, meanwhile, was only able to convert once despite having eight opportunities for the game.
Both teams will meet again for the series finale tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at the Tate Rink. Fans can watch game live on CBS College Sports by tuning in on DirecTV channel 613 or Dish Network 152. Time Warner Cable customers can view the game on channel 322.
