Late Goal Sinks Comeback at Army

Junior Chris Risi scored his third goal of the season against Army.
West Point, N.Y. – Owen Meyer's goal with 1:45 remaining lifted Army to its third straight win and second over the Mercyhurst College men's hockey team as the Black Knights completed the series sweep with a 4-3 victory in a nationally televised game on CBS College Sports Saturday evening at the Tate Rink. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 7-12-2 overall and 5-6-2 in Atlantic Hockey play.

Meyer, who was responsible for the game-winner in Friday's game, negated a late two-goal rally by the Lakers when he knocked home a power-play strike that broke a 3-3 tie and sealed the game.

Despite holding a 1-0 advantage through the first period thanks to freshman Derek Elliot's first collegiate goal, the Lakers found themselves playing catch up after Army caught fire with back-to-back scores in the second and another in the third.

Mercyhurst pulled within one early in the third with a score from junior Chris Risi at 5:55 and then tied the game at 3-3 when freshman Phil Ginand beat goaltender Jay Clark to the far post on the power-play at 16:37. However, the comeback would be silenced shortly after the goal when the Black Knights were awarded their sixth power-play of the game.

Senior Matt Lundin made 28 saves in his 11th appearance this season while counterpart Clark stopped 25 for his third consecutive win.

The Black Knights controlled the momentum of the game with a 32-28 edge in shots and six power-play opportunities, two of which they converted. Mercyhurst, on the other hand, had seven extra-man chances and one conversion.

Mercyhurst will return home this weekend to kickoff the start of a nine-game homestand beginning with a two-game series against AHA foe Sacred Heart on Friday, Jan. 16 and Saturday, Jan. 17.
