No. 21 Lakers Take OT Victory Against 'Ville

Brian McTear led all scorers with 25 points against Millersville.
ERIE, Pa. -- With six seconds remaining, No. 21 Mercyhurst's Brian McTear knotted the game at 59-59 on a layup to force overtime against Millersville, and the Lakers would roll in the extra session to claim a 70-66 victory.

McTear, who finished with a game-high 25 points, scored eight second-half points, including four in the game's final two minutes.

Beginning the second half with a 26-22 lead, the Lakers stretched their lead over Millersville to as many as 11 points with just over 10 minutes remaining. However, the Marauders rattled off a 14-2 run behind five points from Reggie Bates and back-to-back 3-pointers by Cullen Murray-Kemp to give Millersville its first lead of the game with 6:45 remaining.

From there, Mercyhurst was able to rebuild its lead to 55-50 with 3:22 remaining but would see Millersville use another run to tie the game at 57-57 on a layup by Jason Blake.

A foul by Jeremiah Wise with 39 seconds remaining sent Millersville's Brandon Widener to the line where he connected on two free throws and gave the Marauders a 59-57 lead.

Widener was involved in another game-changing play with 16 seconds remaining, but this time he had the ball stolen by McTear and Mercyhurst called a timeout with 11 seconds left to set up the senior guard's layup that forced the extra session.

In overtime, Elliot Engelmann added a 3-pointer at 3:39 to start an 8-3 run in which McTear added a layup and Nnamdi Nnadili his only 3-pointer of the game to stretch the Lakers' lead to 67-62 with just under two minutes remaining.

Two other Lakers joined McTear in double-digits as Jordan Armstrong added 13 points and Engelmann finished with 11 tallies.

Mercyhurst was 3-of-6 in the extra session, including 2-of-3 from behind the arc and finished almost perfect from the charity stripe as the Lakers hit 3-of-4 free throws. For Millersville, the Marauders were unable to continue their hot shooting in overtime, making just 25 percent (2-of-6) of their attempts in comparison to the second half where they finished 10-of-20 from the field.

The Lakers improve to 12-1 overall while Millersville falls to 6-7 in the final weekend of PSAC crossover play. Next up for Mercyhurst is the PSAC Western Division opener against Slippery Rock. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
