Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team went 2-0 Saturday on the final day of the Laker Invitational, completing a perfect weekend, sweeping all four matches at the event. The Lakers defeated Bowie State in the morning match 25-11, 25-13, 25-16 and beat West Liberty State in the final match of the tournament 25-16, 25-13, 25-14.
Mercyhurst used all 15 players on its roster in both matches, extending its winning streak to five in the process. The Lakers were never really challenged in either match and hit over .300 in both matches, something the team had only done once in its first seven contests. Mercyhurst was a sparkling .442 against West Liberty State.
Five players had at least five kills and four players had at least five digs in the three-set win over Bowie State. The Bulldogs had no answer for setter
Julia Butler's service game as she had six aces. As a team, the Lakers had 6.0 blocks, while Bowie State went without a block for the match.
In the win over West Liberty State,
Erin English had 12 kills and a .478 attack percentage. Freshman
Kelsey Richardson had the best match of her young career, posting nine kills and a .538 attack percentage. Sophomore libero
Kendall Ashworth had 14 digs and two aces.
English, Butler and
Lauren Kubinski were all named to the all-tournament team, along with Slippery Rock's Jen Blasko, Kaylee Smith, and Kim Wilson, West Liberty State's Melissa Pierchzchala, and Saint Michael's Stephanie Smetana. Both Mercyhurst and Slippery Rock went 4-0 at the tournament. Saint Michael's and West Liberty State finished 2-2, while Bowie State and Holy Family finished 1-3. Ohio Valley closed out the tournament winless in four contests.
Mercyhurst will be back in action Tuesday when the Lakers host California (Pa.) at 7 p.m.
