Shippensburg, Pa. – Behind the strength of three first half goals, the No. 3 Shippensburg Red Raiders went on to defeat the Mercyhurst College field hockey team, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at the Robb Sports Complex in Shippensburg, Pa.
With the loss, the Lakers fall to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action. Shippensburg, on the other hand, improves to 9-1 on the campaign and 3-1 in conference play.
Junior
Megan Rasmussen led the offense with her second goal of the season, while on defense, seniors
Jen Macri and
Jennifer Coleman split time in net. Macri made seven saves and allowed three goals in 19:51 while Coleman wrapped up the game's 50:09 with two saves.
Despite falling behind, 1-0, in the opening minutes, Mercyhurst tied the game with Rasmussen's goal at the 15:51 mark. However, it would be as close as the Lakers would get as the Red Raiders would go on to add two more scores to take a 3-1 advantage heading into halftime. Ship capped off the game with a fourth goal in the second half.
Shippensburg outshot Mercyhurst, 23-3, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 10-1.
The Lakers conclude their tour of eastern Pennsylvania on Sunday, Sept. 28 with a contest against East Stroudsburg. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
