Louisville, Ky. – Behind a combined eight-point performance from the duo of Ellen and Emily West, the Bellarmine Knights defeated the Mercyhurst College field hockey team, 6-3, this afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
Ellen West, a freshman forward, led the Knights with two goals and three assists, while elder sister Emily, contributed three scores in the team's second win of the season.
Mercyhurst (0-1), with three different players registering scores, outshot its opponent, 19-11, but was stifled by the goaltending tactics of Kristina Thompson and a 12-save performance.
After falling behind, 1-0, just 13:15 into the game, Megan Rassmussen (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford) evened the score for the Lakers with a strike at the 16:10 mark.
However, after a 15-minute scoring drought, the Knights would heat up again with back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart to take a 6-3 score into halftime.
Bellarmine continued its offensive threat in the second half, scoring a goal right out of the gates to create three-goal cushion.
That cushion would hold up as both teams traded goals through the rest of the game.
Emily Warren (Amherst, N.Y. / Amherst Central) added her second point of the game with a goal at 41:56 while
Brittany Jeffords (Amherst, N.Y. / Amherst) found the back of the box on an unassisted play at 55:40.
Jennifer Coleman (Newfane, N.Y. / Newfane) recorded the loss in net with four saves.
Mercyhurst returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 6 when the Lakers to travel to Mansfield, Pa. for a 12 p.m. contest against PSAC foe Mansfield.
