Springfield, Mass. – The Mercyhurst College men's hockey team won its sixth-straight game with an 11-1 victory over Atlantic Hockey foe American International Saturday night in Springfield, Mass. With the win, the Lakers improve to 7-8-1 on the season and 5-2-1 in conference play.
Sophomores
Steve Cameron and
Scott Pitt led the offense with six points apiece. Cameron netted two goals and four assists while Pitt added one marker and five helpers. Senior
Matt Pierce marked his second straight game with three goals, connecting three times in the second period while also adding two helpers for five points in the contest.
Mercyhurst controlled the game from the start, scoring three goals in the first, six in the second and capping off the game with two in the third before AIC got on the board with just 46 seconds remaining.
Sophomore
Brandon Coccimiglio started the game with his fourth goal of the season at 1:41 followed by a strike from freshman
Phil Ginand at 6:01 and a marker from Cameron at 11:07 to build up a 3-0 advantage heading into the second.
Mercyhurst let the offense run wild in the middle stanza, scoring six times to build up a 9-0 lead. Pierce netted his first of the game 1:38 into the period right before Cameron extended the score with his 11th of the season at 1:53. Pierce connected again to give the visitors a 6-0 cushion with under eight minutes to play. Pitt got in on the action at the15:46 mark while senior
Kirk Medernach buried his first of the season at 17:57. Pierce wrapped up the period with his third goal at 18:50.
The Lakers added two tallies in the third, increasing the lead to 11-0 with a lamp-lighter from sophomore
Dan Bremner with just 57 seconds elapsed followed by a second from Ginand at 9:15.
American International's Steve Mcleod broke up the 11-goal run with under a minute left when he beat senior
Matt Lundin at 19:14. Lundin made 28 saves to earn his second win of the season.
Mercyhurst finished the game with a 43-29 edge in shots and connected three times on the power-play. AIC stuck paydirt once on four tries with the extra-man advantage.
Mercyhurst returns to action on Friday, Dec. 12 when the Lakers take on RIT in Rochester, N.Y. Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
