Lakers take fifth at PSAC Championships

Andy Lamancusa paced the Lakers with a fourth-place finish at 157 lbs. Mercyhurst placed 5th out of 10 teams.
ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College wrestlers scored 60 points and placed fifth out of 10 teams at the 2008-09 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Mercyhurst College.

Edinboro won its fourth consecutive team title with 173.5 points, becoming the first team in over 50 years to win more than three straight trophies. Bloomsburg (108), Clarion (101) and Lock Haven (90.5) rounded out the top five with Gannon (59), East Stroudsburg (54), Kutztown (46), Shippensburg (29.5) and Millersville (23) wrapping up the field, respectively.

Andy Lamancusa captured a fourth-place finish as he led seven Lakers in the championship session. The junior 157-pounder fell to Clarion's Hadley Harrison, 3-2, in the third-place match.

125-pound Payne Lint finished with a fifth-place performance, pinning Gannon's Scott Baron at 6:04 after posting a technical fall over Baron in the first round of the tournament, 19-4 (6:10).

At 174 lbs, Kevin Hardy also posted a fall in the fifth-place match, pinning Millersville's Shane Smith at 5:51.

At 133 lbs, Michael Baxter fell in the fifth-place match to East Stroudsburg's Matt Swallow by a 10-6 decision. Swallow's win avenged a 6-4 loss to Baxter in the quarterfinals. 

Heavyweight Kenny Bluska also fell in the fifth-place match, falling to Lock Haven's Gabe Murtoff in a hard-fought 3-1 loss.

Tournament Notes:

• Edinboro becomes the first team since Lock Haven to win four consecutive titles. The Bald Eagles claimed titles in 1940-42 and 1947-48. No titles were awarded from 1943-46 due to World War II.
• Edinboro's Gregor Gillespie becomes a three-time champion and is named the Tournament's “Outstanding Wrestler” for second consecutive year.
