Holy Cross Works Overtime To Defeat Lakers, 4-3

Worcester, Mass. – Despite battling back from a 3-1 deficit, the Mercyhurst College men's hockey team saw its late rally foiled as Jordan Cyr scored his fourth goal of the series in overtime to lift Holy Cross to a 4-3 win Saturday evening at the Hart Center. With the loss, the Lakers fall to 1-7 overall and 1-1 in Atlantic Hockey, while Holy Cross improves 2-4-1 and 2-3-1 in league play.

Mercyhurst jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as sophomore Steve Cameron connected off a pass from junior Matt Fennell on the power-play at the 4:31 mark of the first period. Senior Matt Lundin also tallied an assist on the play.

Holy Cross came storming back though, scoring three goals over a span of 8:24. Rob Forshner tied the game at 12:30 while Mike Daly gave the Crusaders a 2-1 lead with less than 40 seconds to play in the period. Cyr added his first of the game with just 39 seconds elapsed in the second period.

The Lakers answered the rush with one of their own later in the frame. Junior Cullen Eddy kickstarted the attack with his first tally of the season on the power-play at 14:46 followed by a strike from junior Chris Risi at 16:02 to tie the game at 3-3.

After a scoreless third period, both teams headed into overtime. Cyr, who was in search of his first goal coming into the series, tacked in his second of the match to break the 3-3 deadlock and give his team its second win of the season with less than a minute passing.

Holy Cross outshot the Lakers, 36-25, but was held to three even-strength tallies thanks to a 32-save performance from Lundin. The Crusaders' fourth goal came on the power-play.

Mercyhurst returns home this weekend to host AHA foe Bentley in a two-game series beginning on Friday, Nov. 14 at 7:05 p.m.
