Edinboro Deals Four-Set Defeat To Lakers

Katie Fritz led the Lakers in kills and digs against Edinboro.
Box Score

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team had eight blocks and four service aces but Edinboro pulled away from the Lakers for a 25-21, 25-14, 17-25, 25-22 defeat Tuesday night in the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

Edinboro hit .248 for the match and Mercyhurst had no players with more than eight kills in the match. Despite those facts, the Lakers won the third set and hung tough in the first and fourth sets. The Fighting Scots, though, pulled away late in both of those to pick up the season sweep of Mercyhurst.

Mercyhurst led the opening set 11-8 after a service error but Edinboro scored the next five points and never trailed again. A Jenna Matson kill closed the deficit to three points at 24-21, but Edinboro's Olivia Williams picked up one of her 15 kills on the evening to put the opening set away.

After Edinboro cruised to an easy victory in the second set, Mercyhurst bounced back in the third. The Lakers scored seven of the final nine points to pull away for a 25-17 win.

The two teams battled back-and-forth in the fourth set and the score was tied 15-15 before Williams had another kill. Edinboro never trailed after that point, extending the lead to four points before Mercyhurst rallied with a Lauren Kubinski kill and Julia Butler ace to make it 23-22. After an Edinboro timeout, Williams had her final kill of the night and a Mercyhurst attack error followed to end the match.

Katie Fritz led Mercyhurst with eight kills and 16 digs, while Erin English had seven kills and a team-high .357 attack percentage. Justine Smith had five blocks and Julia Butler handed out 29 assists.

Edinboro improves to 26-6 on the season and 10-1 in PSAC West play. Mercyhurst falls to 19-13 and 5-6 in the West. The Lakers will host Indiana (Pa.) in the final regular season match of the year Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
