Lakers Close Out Successful Crossover With Two Wins

Julia Butler directed the offense to a 3-0 weekend.
West Chester, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team completed its weekend at West Chester University undefeated, winning a pair of PSAC crossover matches Saturday to go 3-0 on the weekend. The Lakers beat Millersville 25-16, 25-20, 25-23 and then defeated West Chester 25-18, 25-23, 19-25, 25-15.
 
Mercyhurst rolled to a win in its opener against Millersville, getting 11 kills and eight digs from Jenna Matson. Katie Fritz added eight kills and nine digs, while Kendall Ashworth had eight digs. Justine Smith added four blocks.
 
The Lakers picked up a critical victory over West Chester in the second match of the day, beating a team that it could be battling with for an NCAA playoff spot. Senior Lauren Kubinski had 14 kills and Matson added nine and 14 digs. Smith had nine kills and three blocks, while Julia Butler had 40 assists and three aces. Ashworth had 16 digs and Fritz finished with 13.
 
Millersville fell to 4-11 with the loss and West Chester dropped to 14-6. Mercyhurst has now won four in a row and is 13-8 heading into its second set of PSAC West matches. The Lakers will play at Slippery Rock, a team it beat in four games earlier this year, Tuesday at 7 p.m.
