Lakers Close Out 2008 With 5-0 Rout Of Seton Hill

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst College field hockey team concluded its 2008 campaign with a 5-0 victory over Seton Hill Tuesday afternoon at Tullio Field. With the victory, the Lakers finish the season with an overall record of 10-9 and a mark of 8-2 at home.

In their highest scoring output since the 2006 season, the Lakers saw several players achieve multi-point affairs. Sophomore Sara Wowkowych and juniors Courtney Loper and Kelsie Weber netted three points apiece with a goal and an assist while freshman Serena Slattery tallied two helpers.

Despite a 28-7 edge in shots for the game, the Lakers were limited to just one score in the first half. Weber provided the eventual game-winner at 13:26 when she took a pass from Slattery and knocked it short post for the 1-0 advantage.

It wasn't until the second when the offense took over. Wowkowych and senior Courtney Monin expanded the score to 3-0 with back-to-back tallies less than 90 second apart. Wowkowych added her fourth of the season at 41:16 followed by a strike from Monin at the 42:37 mark.

Loper increased the lead to 4-0 thanks to a successful conversion on a penalty stroke at 54:06 while senior Haley Brochu closed out the game with a tally at 57:26.

Senior Jen Macri registered the win with one save over the span of 45:07. Freshman Ashley Wiskup finished out the game with two stops.

Along with the advantage in shots, the Lakers also held the upper hand in penalty corners, 16-2.
