Clarkson Sweeps No. 6 Women's Hockey With 4-2 Win

Sophomore Vicki Bendus netted her first goal of the season against Clarkson.
Potsdam, N.Y. – Clarkson took full advantage of eight penalties committed by the No. 6 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team as the Golden Knights completed the sweep with a 4-2 victory Saturday afternoon at the Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights were successful at converting two of those extra-man chances in handing the Lakers (3-3) their first series sweep since the 2005-06 season when Minnesota accomplished the feat.

The Golden Knights controlled the pace in the first period with a 20-9 advantage in shots, but were limited to just one goal. Carlee Eusepi gave the home team a 1-0 lead when she took a feed from Marie-Jo Gaudet and deflected it past senior Courtney Drennen at 12:42.

Mercyhurst made a quick comeback though, tying the game less than a minute later with an extra-man score from Vicki Bendus at 13:38.

The score would remain tied at one until midway through the third period when the Golden Knights kicked it up notch. Gaudet broke the 1-1 tie with her third goal of the series on the power-play at 8:59 followed by a lamp lighter from Melissa Waldie at the 12:16 mark.

The Lakers made a brief comeback when sophomore Jesse Scanzano connected on an extra-attacker opportunity at 19:05, but Kimberly McKenney sealed the win when she sent a shot into an empty net with seven seconds left to play.

Clarkson outshot Mercyhurst, 34-21. Drennen finished the game with 30 saves while counterpart Eve Garndmont-Berube earned the win with 19 stops.

Mercyhurst continues its eight game road trip when the Lakers travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to take on Colgate on Friday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 1. Face-off is set for 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday.
