Alaska-Anchorage Tops Lakers, 6-4

Senior Matt Pierce scored two goals and added an assist against UAA.
Fairbanks, Alaska –Alaska-Anchorage scored four unanswered goals over the span of 16 minutes to overcome an early deficit and defeat the Mercyhurst College men's hockey team, 6-4, Saturday evening in the final day of the Brice Alaska Goal Rush in Fairbanks, Alaska.

After suffering a 5-0 shutout at the hands of host Alaska-Fairbanks the night before, the Lakers (0-4) came out on fire with three straight goals in the first period. Senior Matt Pierce led the attack, scoring back-to-back at 3:03 and 12:48 before junior Chris Risi lit the lamp at 13:12 to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Steve Cameron collected two of his three assists in the game on Pierce's goals.

Alaska-Anchorage bounced back though, answering the Lakers with four consecutive scores. The Seawolves cut the deficit to two nearing the end of the first period followed by three in the second to take a 4-3 advantage with five minutes remaining.

Senior Brett Robinson broke up the run with his second goal of the season thanks to assists from Cameron and Pierce at 18:21, closing out the middle stanza with the score tied, 4-4.

However, the Seawolves sealed the game with a 2-0 run in the third period. Ken Selby netted the eventual game-winner just 2:40 into the period while Brian Bales added an insurance marker with 44 seconds remaining in the game.

Senior Matt Lundin had another 30-plus save outing in goal, stopping 38 shots to give him 80 on the weekend. 

UAA outshot the Lakers, 44-21, and limited them to one power-play goal on five attempts. The Seawolves converted 1-for-4 with the extra-man advantage.

Mercyhurst returns to action next weekend when the Lakers travel to Omaha, Neb. to take on CCHA foe Nebraska-Omaha on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday, Oct. 25.
