Men's Ice Hockey Falls to Michigan in Game One

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team fell to Michigan 11-1 in game one of their series.

The Lakers took the ice in front of 5800 people Friday night as they took on the Wolverines. The first period commenced with Michael Chambre taking position in goal for the Lakers. Despite a series of defensive blocks by Trent Sambrook and John Larkin, Michigan established control early, resulting in a trio of even-strength goals putting the Lakers at a disadvantage. The Lakers managed to create some offensive pressure with shots from Dominik Bartecko and Tyler DesRochers, but Michigan's defense remained resilient.

Mercyhurst capitalized on a late opportunity as DesRochers scored an even-strength goal, assisted by Bartecko and Ryan Coughlin, narrowing the deficit. Despite two power-play chances, the Lakers were unable to convert, and the period closed with the Wolverines leading 4-1.

The second frame started with the Lakers immediately pressuring the Michigan defense, as Bartecko and Coughlin both took early shots. Despite the offensive push, Michigan's defense held strong. Chambre was key in keeping the Lakers in the game with several saves.

Michigan's offense capitalized on their opportunities, increasing their lead. Mercyhurst attempted to respond and had a power play opportunity, but Michigan's penalty kill was effective. The period ended with Mercyhurst trailing 6-1.

The third period began with the Lakers winning consecutive faceoffs, setting an assertive tone early on. However, Michigan quickly extended their lead. Despite Mercyhurst's efforts, including shots by Christian Kocsis and Francesco Iasenza, Michigan's defense held firm.

Later in the period, Michigan added to their lead. Mercyhurst's attempts to respond, including shots by Connor Pelc and Barrett Brooks, were thwarted as the period concluded with Michigan securing a decisive 11-1 victory.

DesRochers scored one goal and registered two shots on net. Pelc excelled in faceoffs, winning 60% of his attempts. Chambre faced 48 shots, making 37 saves in the net. Sambrook contributed defensively with four blocked shots.

The Lakers begin the season with an overall record of 0-1-0 after their loss. They will be back at Michigan tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. to finish up the series.
