Mercyhurst Splits Two Matches In West Virginia

Jenna Matson had 11 kills in each match Saturday.
Wheeling, W.Va. – The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team had its long winning streak snapped but the Lakers did split two matches at the PSAC/WVIAC Crossover Tournament Saturday. The Lakers extended their winning streak to nine in a row with a 25-17, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16 win over Alderson-Broaddus before losing to Wheeling Jesuit 25-17, 25-19, 25-16.

In the win over Alderson-Broaddus, Mercyhurst used a balanced attack to win the first two sets and cruise to the win after that. Lauren Kubinski had 12 kills and Katie Fritz and Jenna Matson added 11 apiece. Julia Butler had 14 digs and Justine Smith finished with five blocks.

Mercyhurst's win streak was then ended by Wheeling Jesuit, the team ranked No. 10 in the Atlantic Region. Matson finished with 11 kills and Kubinski added nine and four blocks. Kendall Ashworth had 17 digs and Butler had 15. Smith posted four more blocks.

With the split, Mercyhurst equals its win total from a year ago, moving to 18-9 on the season. No Laker volleyball team has won more than 18 matches since the 2002 team went 21-8. The Lakers will play at California (Pa.) Tuesday night at 7 p.m. before hosting rival Gannon Saturday at 7 p.m.
