Erie, Pa. – Senior
Hayley McMeekin scored two goals and extended her scoring streak to four games as the No. 9 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team completed the sweep of Rensselaer with a 4-1 victory Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
McMeekin's back-to-back tallies helped the Lakers (3-1) build a 2-0 lead over Engineers in the first period. Her first score gave the hometeam a 1-0 lead when she redirected a shot from sophomore
Geena Prough at 6:42, while increasing the advantage to 2-0 off an assist from sophomore
Lauren Ragen at 9:30.
RPI closed out the scoring in the frame when Kendra Dunlop brought the Engineers within one on a wrap-around attempt at 15:42.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second period, taking the 2-1 score late into the third where the Mercyhurst offense would reawaken.
Freshman
Kelley Steadman gave the Lakers some additional breathing room with a breakaway score at 17:30, while sophomore
Ashley Cockell provided the knockout punch with an empty-netter just 16 seconds later.
Freshman
Hillary Pattenden made 29 saves and allowed one goal to earn the win.
Overall, RPI held the advantage in shots, 30-28, but was limited to one score on the power-play. Mercyhurst finished the game 1-for-4 on the extra-man advantage.
Mercyhurst returns to action next weekend when the Lakers travel to Potsdam, N.Y. to take on Clarkson in a two-game series beginning on Friday, Oct. 25.
