Lakers Win Seventh Straight By Rolling Past Houghton

Jenna Matson had 21 kills and eight digs Tuesday night.
Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team dominated the first and fourth sets to beat NAIA Houghton College 25-10, 22-25, 25-22, 25-11 Tuesday night at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. The win was the seventh in a row for the Lakers.
 
Jenna Matson had 21 kills, eight digs and two blocks and the Lakers blew open the opening set with a 12-2 run. Houghton bounced back and played competitively as the teams split the next two sets but Mercyhurst hit .625 in the fourth with just one attack error to cruise to the victory.
 
Erin English added 13 kills on a .423 swing percentage and three aces, while Lauren Kubinski had 11 kills. The Lakers served up six aces on the evening. Libero Kendall Ashworth had a match-high 15 digs and setter Julia Butler handed out 46 assists.
 
Houghton falls to 9-12 on the season and Mercyhurst improves to 16-8. The Lakers will compete in the PSAC/WVIAC Crossover at Wheeling Jesuit Friday and Saturday, playing WVIAC schools Charleston, Alderson-Broaddus, and Wheeling Jesuit.
