Sophia Fortner joined the Mercyhurst coaching staff in 2022 as the graduate assistant and now enters her second season in 2023-24.
Prior to coming to Erie, Fortner finished her playing career at Ashland University where she graduated with a degree in Business Administration. She joined the Eagles in 2019 after starting her career at the University of Toledo. In her last season at Ashland, she played in13 games, starting four of them. She had a season high six points on Jan. 31st, 2022 against Trevecca Nazarene.
Ashland made it the NCAA Regional Semifinals in her final season while also going 29-3 overall.
In her first season with Mercyhurst, Fortner was instrumental in establishing a strong Laker offense.The team shot 36.8% as a team from deep to lead the PSAC while ranking eighth in the country.
