ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst defeated Canisius 3-1 on Saturday. The Lakers finished with a 14-2 shot advantage, including 7-2 in shots on goal.
Luis Felipe Santos converted a penalty kick in the 39th minute to open the scoring and put the Lakers in front 1-0. Earlier, the Lakers generated the first-half chances, with Max Beech and Ronny Wakelin sending shots high before Joe Chinchilla forced a save in the 33rd minute.
The half also included a physical stretch from the 20th to 30th minute, with four combined fouls and cards as the Lakers continued to press for the breakthrough. Chinchilla put another shot on frame in the 45th minute, and the Lakers held Canisius without a recorded shot while taking a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Lakers created several second-half chances, including shots by Benjamin Buckley, Chinchilla, Beech and Alvar Silva before Silva scored in the 64th minute to make it 2-0. Canisius answered in the 68th minute, but the Lakers kept creating opportunities as Nathan Katari gave the Lakers a late cushion in the 85th minute, scoring his first career goal to push the lead from 2-1 to 3-1 before the Lakers finished off the result. Tyler Prex forced a save and Silva later struck the right woodwork. Jaime Tedaldi made a save in the 84th minute, and the Lakers played through a physical closing stretch with multiple fouls and yellow cards before ending the match with a 3-1 win.
