WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Mercyhurst softball team finally played their series finale at New Haven after inclement weather pushed yesterday's game to today. The series had been split to this point, with the Chargers winning game one, 4-0, and the Lakers winning game two, 10-5. MU scored the first run in the first inning today and eventually led 2-0 after the top of the fourth. However, New Haven scored eight unanswered runs to secure the comeback and take game three, 8-2.
Mercyhurst (8-27, 7-11 NEC) took an early lead in the first frame when
Gabriella DeLuca doubled to left field, allowing
Bailey Cannon to score. This marked DeLuca's 30th RBI of the season, which is top four in the NEC.
The next few frames were marked by great pitching from both New Haven (9-30, 7-14 NEC) and Cannon. In the fourth inning, the Lakers added to their lead as
Braylynn Kelly delivered an RBI single to center field, driving in pinch runner
Brynna King.
However, the Chargers mounted an incredible comeback and responded robustly. They put up seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, with key hits including a bases clearing double once the Lakers changed positions. The score was now 7-2 in favor of New Haven.
The Chargers extended their lead in the sixth stanza with an RBI double to center field. Mercyhurst could not get anything going and were completely held off. New Haven took game three, 8-2, and secured the series, 2-1.
The Lakers' series at Oakland tomorrow, April 21, has been postponed. The team's next series will take place 4/25 and 4/26 at home vs. Le Moyne. They are currently two games behind the Dolphins in the NEC standings, so this series is pivotal for both team's playoff hopes.
