ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst secured a decisive 12–3 victory over New Haven on Thursday, fueled by a 16-hit offensive performance. The Lakers lineup was highlighted by two home runs, contributing significantly to their commanding win.
Mercyhurst secured a dominant 12–3 victory over New Haven, highlighted by a strong start and consistent offense. In the first inning,
Logan Koslin was hit by a pitch to get on base.
Jayden Walker then doubled to drive in Koslin, followed by
Zachary Kourous doubling to bring Walker home.
Mike Samarin added another run with a single, and
Zach Black and
Derrick Holmes Jr. each contributed RBI singles, giving the Lakers a 5–0 lead.
New Haven responded in the fourth inning when they hit a three-run homer, narrowing the lead to 5–3. However, Mercyhurst extended their lead in the fifth inning. Kourous singled, stole second, and scored on a single by
Ranciel Ventura.
Dana Williams then singled to bring Samarin home, making it 7–3.
In the seventh, Samarin was hit by a pitch, and after an error, Ventura scored on a wild pitch. Williams drove in another run, extending the lead to 9–3.
The eighth inning saw Mercyhurst's offense continue to flourish. Kourous tripled, and Samarin followed with a two-run homer. Ventura added a solo home run, securing a 12–3 advantage.
Matthew Delvaux demonstrated efficiency and control across nine innings. He allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out six batters, all without issuing a single walk. Delvaux threw 110 pitches, with 76 of them being strikes, leading to a WHIP of 0.67. Despite surrendering one home run and a double, Delvaux's ability to induce 15 groundouts helped minimize further damage.
Kourous recorded three hits, including a double and a triple, while also scoring three runs and collecting one RBI. Samarin contributed to the offensive effort with two hits, three RBIs, and a home run. Ventura matched Kourous with three hits, adding two RBIs and a home run, and also stole a base. Delvaux pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out six over nine innings.
Looking ahead, the Lakers will host a doubleheader against New Haven starting at 11 a.m. ET on Friday, April 3 at Mercyhurst Baseball Field in Erie, Pennsylvania.
