PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Mercyhurst secured a commanding 14-1 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore (7-27, 6-15) on Sunday at Hawk Stadium.
The Lakers amassed 14 hits, including a home run, and capitalized on UMES's pitching struggles to score seven runs in the first inning.
Mercyhurst opened the game with a commanding seven-run first inning.
Logan Koslin singled to center field, followed by a walk to
Jayden Walker.
Zachary Kourous hit an RBI double to right field, bringing in Koslin. Walker scored on a groundout, and
Zac Evenson singled home Kourous.
Parker Zeiser and
Riley Ames contributed with a single and a walk, respectively, leading to two more runs. Walker capped off the inning with an RBI single. The Lakers led 7-0 after the first inning.
In the second inning, the Lakers added another run.
Luke Babcock walked and advanced to third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Mike Samarin. The score was 8-0 in favor of Mercyhurst after two innings.
UMES scored its only run of the game in the fourth inning via a RBI-double. The score stood at 8-1 through four innings.
Mercyhurst extended its lead in the fifth inning.
Parker Zeiser doubled and scored on a double by Koslin, increasing the lead to 9-1 after five innings.
In the sixth inning,
Zac Evenson hit a solo home run to right field, pushing Mercyhurst's lead to 10-1.
The seventh inning saw the Lakers score four more runs.
Riley Ames and Koslin both walked and stole bases, eventually scoring on a fielder's choice and an error. Walker scored on a passed ball, and Ventura singled home another run. This brought the final score to 14-1.
Andrew Malec delivered a strong performance on the mound, pitching six innings and allowing only two hits with one earned run. He issued six walks but managed to strike out four batters over 102 pitches, earning his second win of the season.
Noah Ehlers followed with a solid relief appearance, pitching one inning with two strikeouts, throwing seven of his eight pitches for strikes.
Logan Koslin recorded four hits, two runs, and three RBIs, showcasing a strong offensive performance. Evenson added two hits and two RBIs, including a home run, contributing significantly to the scoring. Ames drew two walks and stole two bases, impacting the game on the base paths.
