Flag Football Sneaks By Rutgers in Overtime, 14-13; Falls to Delaware, 24-16

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Mercyhurst flag football team went 1-1 on the second day of the NCFFL Pennsylvania Regional tournament. The Lakers fell to Delware in game one, but bounced back in game two, downing Rutger 14-13 in overtime.
 
GAME ONE VS DELAWARE (24-16, L)
Mercyhurst went down in the opening half, allowing Delaware to score the opening touchdown at the 17 minute mark.
 
The Blue Hens offense continued to add on in the opening half, scoring again at the 8:30 mark and twice more before the halftime break. Delaware owned a 24-0 advantage at the intermission.
 
The Mercyhurst defense stood tall in the second half, allowing the offense to bring the Lakers within striking distance. The Lakers got on the board with 20 minutes to play as Ellie Schau completed a pass to God'iss Santos who broke free for a long touchdown.
 
Alexis Summers intercepted a pass from the Blue Hens, setting herself up to catch the next Lakers touchdown at the 4:26 mark. With the successful extra point, the Lakers narrowed the gap to eight, with Delaware leading 24-16.
 
The Blue Hens got the ball back following the Laker touchdown, draining most of the clock. When the Lakers got the ball back, they were unable to even the score as Delaware came away with the 24-16 victory.
 
 GAME TWO VS RUTGETS (14-13, W OT)
The Lakers secured a victory in game two, downing Rutgers 14-13 in overtime.
 
Mercyhurst got on the board early with Schau pitching the ball back to JoAnna Saad who ran it in for the score. Schau completed the extra point attempt to Cameron Mullaly to take a 7-0 lead.
 
The Scarlet Knights responded at the end of the first half with a touchdown and successful extra point, knotting the game at seven going into the intermission.
 
A defensive battle in the second half sent the game to overtime where Mercyhurst got the ball first.
 
Schau found Saad again to put the Lakers up 13-0.  Santos caught the extra point which would separate the Lakers from the Knights at the end of the game.
 
Rutgers scored on their possession, but a pass breakup by Isabella Iaquinta on the extra point attempt sealed the victory for the Lakers, 14-13.
