MARTIN, Tenn. – The Mercyhurst STUNT team competed in day two of the MAWC Championship this afternoon. In the first game, the Lakers fell to No. 1 Kentucky, 31-9. They dropped to the loser's bracket and then defeated Northern Kentucky, 31-10. In the next game, they took on No. 3 UT Martin and it was their closest game of the afternoon. The Skyhawks narrowly won, 29-22.
In the first game, MU faced No. 1 Kentucky. The Wildcats proved to be the number one team after their first-round bye. They consistently earned points in each quarter and took advantaged of several two-point rounds. The Lakers managed to earn a couple of points before the half. In the second half, UK pulled away. They nailed their jumps and tumbles and were in sync for the team routine quarter. The final score was 31-9.
The Lakers fell to the loser's bracket and played Northern Kentucky in game two. They can still make the finals as the tournament is double elimination, so this game was important. The Lakers wasted no time. They held up their pyramids and were in complete cohesion the entire game. They advanced to the next round in the bottom bracket with a commanding 31-10 win to knock out the Norse.
In game three of the day, Mercyhurst played the hosts, No. 3 UT Martin. Both sides came ready to play. They executed their routines near perfectly. The Skyhawks were barely leading due to a few two-point rounds. The Lakers were performing well, but they had to forfeit a routine or two along the way. The tournament hosts barely pulled away in the fourth and knocked out MU, 29-22.
The Lakers will play in the national championship at the end of April. They qualified as the fifth seed.
