BALTIMORE, Md. — Mercyhurst fell to Coppin State University with a final score of 2-1 on Friday at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Lakers' lone run came in the sixth inning, but it was not enough to overcome Coppin State's early two-run lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Eagles hit a two-run home run to left field, giving them a 2-0 lead.
Mercyhurst got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning.
Jayden Walker singled through the right side and stole second base.
Mike Samarin then singled to right field, allowing Walker to score, which narrowed the gap to 2-1 after six innings.
Despite the Lakers' efforts, the game concluded with Coppin State maintaining its lead. The final score was 2-1 in favor of the Eagles.
Matthew Delvaux pitched 5.2 innings for the Lakers, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out six Coppin State batters. Delvaux issued only one walk and maintained a WHIP of 0.96 through 109 pitches, with 70 counted as strikes.
Anthony Krause followed in relief, delivering 2.1 innings, during which he allowed two hits and struck out two, with a WHIP of 1.43 and one walk. Both pitchers combined to control the game effectively by limiting Coppin State to six strikeouts and three walks across eight innings.
Jayden Walker excelled by recording two hits, including a double, and swiped three bases.
Mike Samarin contributed with one hit, one RBI, and a stolen base.
Luke Babcock added a hit and a stolen base despite striking out three times.
