Seven Strong Innings From Vargo; Six Total Bases from Kourous Leads Lakers Over Hornets In Game Two

ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst secured a decisive 10-0 victory over Delaware State on Saturday, highlighted by a dominant pitching performance that allowed only one hit over seven innings. The Lakers' offense was bolstered by scoring four runs in both the first and seventh innings, maintaining control throughout the game.

Mercyhurst took an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning against Delaware State. Zachary Kourous walked and stole two bases, eventually scoring on a passed ball. Jayden Walker also scored on a passed ball, while Zach Black added two RBIs with a single, bringing home Ranciel Ventura and Luke Babcock. The Lakers led 4-0 after the first inning.

In the fourth inning, the Lakers extended their lead. Logan Koslin, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a double by Kourous. Riley Ames then singled to score Kourous, pushing the lead to 6-0.

Mercyhurst secured its victory in the seventh inning with four more runs. Zach Black singled in two runs, followed by an error that allowed Logan Koslin to score. Kourous doubled to drive in another run, making it 10-0.

The game concluded with Mercyhust achieving a 10-0 final score over Delaware State.

Nate Vargo delivered a standout performance for the Lakers, pitching a complete game shutout against Delaware State. He allowed only one hit over seven innings, striking out six batters while issuing two walks. Vargo faced 23 batters and maintained a WHIP of 0.43, demonstrating exceptional control and efficiency with 85 pitches, 57 of which were strikes.

Zachary Kourous contributed two runs and two doubles, adding two RBIs and four stolen bases. Vargo pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only one hit and striking out six over seven innings. Zach Black drove in four runs with two hits, including scoring once and stealing a base. Ranciel Ventura reached base three times via hit-by-pitch, scoring twice and stealing two bases.

Looking ahead, the Lakers will host Delaware State on Sunday, March 15 at 12 p.m. at Mercyhurst Baseball Field in Erie, Pennsylvania.
