Women's Basketball Falls to LIU in NEC Tournament Semifinals

ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst fell to LIU, 82-64, at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. Senior Jenna Van Schaik led the way for the Lakers with 28 points, going 12-of-19 from the floor.

Mercyhurst (15-16, 14-4 NEC) opened the first quarter with a focused effort in the paint, achieving an 8–6 advantage in points scored there. Despite Sofia Wilson's two early steals helping to disrupt LIU's momentum, the home team struggled with shooting efficiency, converting only 6 of 21 field goals.

Lena Walz contributed key points with a layup and free throws, while Cici Hernandez added a three-pointer, helping the Green and Blue stay competitive. However, LIU capitalized on their opportunities, shooting an impressive 8 for 11 from the field, including four three-pointers. As the first quarter concluded, Mercyhurst trailed 25–16.

Mercyhurst attempted to close the gap in the second quarter, highlighted by Walz's 3-pointer at 9:15, assisted by Quinn Borroni. Despite this effort, LIU's Kionna Gaines responded with effective scoring, including a layup at 7:19, which expanded its lead. Towards the latter part of the quarter, Wilson connected on a 3-pointer with 1:01 remaining, but the Green and Blue faced turnover challenges. The quarter concluded with Mercyhurst trailing, as the score stood 45–31 in favor of LIU.

Mercyhurst surged in the third quarter, capitalizing on defensive stops and efficient scoring. Jenna Van Schaik was pivotal, scoring multiple layups, including one at 1:02 that narrowed the gap. Despite facing a strong push from LIU, Mercyhurst outscored its opponent in the paint, 12–10, and managed to trim the lead slightly. The quarter concluded with Mercyhurst leading the scoring for the quarter 22–19, though the game ended with LIU winning 64–53.

The Lakers began the fourth quarter with an effort to close the gap, highlighted by Van Schaik's three-pointer with 8:55 remaining, assisted by Erica Hall. Despite their attempts, including a layup from Alena Fusetti and a late three-pointer by Hernandez, Mercyhurst struggled to overcome LIU's advantage. The Sharks advanced to the championship game Sunday, winning 82-64.

The Lakers end their season with a 15-16 record.
