HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Mercyhurst softball team competed in day two of the OUTRIGGER classic in Hawaii. They took an early lead in the first game vs. Portland State and held on to defeat the Vikings, 4-2. This was their first win of the season and freshman pitcher
Alana Stuart earned her first career win in the circle. Hawaii was dominant on all sides of the diamond in game two and went on to win that game, 8-0 after five innings.
In the first inning, Mercyhurst (1-5) scored right away.
Karlie Kasten doubled to right center and later scored on
Jazlynn Sanders' double to center field. The Lakers led after the first frame. Stuart was pitching well and Portland State (4-8) could not get their bats going at first. In the third inning,
Emelie Pascual singled through the left side, followed by
Gabriella DeLuca's walk.
Bailey Cannon then doubled to right field, bringing Pascual home. Sanders added a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing DeLuca to score, pushing the lead to three.
The Vikings narrowed the gap in the fifth inning with a two-run home run. The Lakers were able to prevent any further runs in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, the MU capitalized on a passed ball to extend its lead.
Braylynn Kelly, who pinch ran for
Mackenzie Gillis, scored unearned. Cannon pitched the final innings without allowing any further runs, securing the 4-2 win for Mercyhurst and her first save of the season. Stuart recorded three K's in her first win in the circle.
Hawaii (6-9) took an early lead in the first inning of game two. Two batters singled and then one of the Rainbow Wahine runners scored on a throwing error. A groundout and stolen home base lifted Hawaii to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mercyhurst (1-6) was unable to get on the board early on. The second frame saw Hawaii extend its lead to five after more errors from the Lakers.
In the third stanza, Kelly singled to left field. Kelly then stole second base to put herself in scoring position. The Hawaii pitcher forced a pop fly to center field as Kelly was left on base. In the fourth inning, another Rainbow Wahine batter doubled, and a pinch runner scored from the double. Hawaii increased its lead to six after four innings and then added two more in the fifth from a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. The Lakers could not buy a run as Hawaii went on to win, 8-0.
Tomorrow, the Lakers will play Portland State at 3 p.m. and Hawaii at 8:30 p.m.
