HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Mercyhurst softball team competed in day three of the OUTRIGGER classic in Hawaii. They took an early lead in the first game vs. Portland State and led 3-0 after three innings. However, the Vikings scored 10 unanswered to defeat the Lakers in game one. In game two, Mercyhurst played Hawaii. The Lakers led up through the first five frames. However, a three-run inning by the Rainbow Wahine handed the Lakers a 7-5 defeat in game two.
Mercyhurst (1-7) opened the game strong with an early lead in the first inning.
Jazlynn Sanders singled and advanced on a muffed throw, allowing
Bailey Cannon, who had walked and reached second on a wild pitch, to score. The Lakers led 1-0 by the end of the first inning. In the third inning,
Emelie Pascual reached on a fielding error and later scored on a single by
Gabriella DeLuca. Cannon also crossed home plate after
Mackenzie Gillis and DeLuca's hits, giving the Lakers a three-run advantage after three innings.
Portland State (5-9) responded in the fourth inning with a run, narrowing the gap to two. The fifth inning saw Portland State take control of the game, scoring nine runs. Key plays included a two-RBI double and multiple hits that capitalized on Mercyhurst errors, pushing Portland State ahead 10-3 at the end of the fifth inning. Despite a resilient defensive stand in the sixth and seventh innings by the Lakers, the game concluded with a final score of 10-3 in favor of the Vikings.
Jazlynn Sanders opened the scoring for Mercyhurst (1-8) in the second inning with a solo home run to left center. This tied the game as Hawaii (8-10) also scored once in their half of the inning. In the third stanza, the Lakers took the lead when
Ava Zubovic and
Brynna King reached base, setting up
Emelie Pascual's double to left center, driving in two runs. The Rainbow Wahine answered with one run, narrowing the Lakers' lead to just one. Hawaii gained the upper hand in the fourth, scoring two runs, including one unearned, due to a series of errors. The Lakers were held scoreless in their half of the inning.
The fifth inning saw the Lakers regain the lead as
Brynna King scored on a double by
Bailey Cannon, followed by Sanders' RBI single, putting them back in the lead, 5-4 Hawaii responded in the sixth inning with three runs, capitalizing on the Lakers' defensive errors and some clutch hitting, taking a lead they would not relinquish. Mercyhurst was unable to add to their score in the seventh inning, sealing the game for Hawaii, 7-5.
The Lakers have some time off before traveling to RMU on March 14.
