Softball Set to Compete in OUTRIGGER Classic in Hawaii

Thursday, Feb. 26 – 6 p.m. 
Friday, Feb. 27 – 6/8:30 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 28 – 3/8:30 p.m.

The Mercyhurst softball team is set to compete in their second tournament of the season. With snow on the ground in Erie, the team has competed in South Carolina and now, Hawaii. The first game is set for Friday, Feb. 26 vs. Portland State at 6 p.m. Friday's games are set to begin at 6 and 8:30 p.m. vs. Portland State and Hawaii. The Lakers will close with a pair of games vs. Portland State and Hawaii at 3 and 8:30 p.m. 
 
Previous Results
The Lakers are 0-4 to start the season. They began the season on Friday, Feb. 13 in South Carolina at the Scotsman Invitational. They opened with a pair of games against Albany and the tournament hosts, Presbyterian. Albany beat them, 6-0. The Lakers and Blue Hose played a 17-run thriller that the Lakers led for the first half of the game. Presbyterian came back and beat them, 10-7. On that Saturday, ETSU defeated MU 10-2 in six innings and then Presbyterian ran away with game two, 12-3. The Sunday contest was canceled due to rain in the area. 
 
Matchup History
This is the first time Mercyhurst has faced Portland State or Hawaii not just in softball, but in any sport. 
 
A Pair of Batting Leaders 
In the batter's box, Junior pitcher Bailey Cannon leads the Lakers. Cannon has a .400 batting average and 1.238 on base plus slugging percentage in her 10 at bats. She recorded two runs, four hits, a double, and a triple at the Scotsman tourney. 

Gabriella DeLuca had a steller weekend in S.C. as well. DeLuca had a .333 batting average, 2 runs, three hits, 2 RBIs, and a two-run homer in just nine at bats. The Erie Native also was awarded an NEC Prime Performer award after the first few games of her collegiate career. 

Scouting Hawaii   
  • The Rainbow Wahine are 5-9 to start the season. 
  • They hosted the Bank of Hawaii Paradise Classic, featuring North Dakota, Seattle, and Pacific.
  • Their first game of the season ended in a narrow, 2-1 victory over Seattle. 
  • They then beat North Dakota, 4-2, and Pacific, 6-2. 
  • They beat Pacific again the following day, 3-1. 
  • Seattle handed them their first loss of the season in a 9-3 defeat to close the tournament. 
  • Hawaii then traveled to California Baptist in a tough tournament they went 1-3 in. 
  • They lost to Utah State 5-1 and then put up 16 runs against the Aggies the next day in a 16-8 victory. 
  • LMU beat them 6-0 and then California Baptist beat them 9-0 in five innings. 
  • Their most recent tournament was the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in California. They lost to BYU, No. 20 Duke, Nebraska, Oregon State, Saint Mary's (Calif.), and even Team Japan. 
  • Kolbi Kochi is among the top of the batting categories with a .318 average and an OPS of .749. In 22 at bats, Kochi has 1 run, 7 hits, and five RBIS. 
  • Maycen Gibbs and Jamie McGaughey have two runs each and five or more runs and RBIs.
Scouting Portland State   
  • The Vikings are 3-7 to start this season. 
  • They started the season 0-3 at the Easton Classic at Cal State. 
  • CSUN, Cal State Fullerton, and Boise State all beat them.
  • They picked up their first win of the season in game four of that tournament when they beat Cal State Fullerton, 3-1. 
  • They also got revenge on CSUN the final day with an 8-5 victory.
  • Their second and most-recent tournament was the Littlewood Invitational at Arizona State. They played some tough teams, falling to Indiana, RV/No.22 Arizona State, and Nevada. 
  • They did beat Pacific 7-2 in this tournament. 
  • Breanna Lutz has the highest OPS (.884). Lutz has eight hits for six runs in her 24 at bats so far. 
  • The Vikings have three batters with a .300 batting average or higher: Lutz (.333), Grace Johnson (.320), and Nichole Orozco (.308).
