LORETTO, Pa. — The Mercyhurst men's basketball team (13-14, 8-6 NEC) secured a decisive victory over Saint Francis University (6-20, 4-9 NEC) with a final score of 94-79 on Saturday afternoon at DeGol Arena. The Lakers dominated the paint, scoring 48 points inside, which contributed significantly to their win.
The Lakers commenced the first half by setting an aggressive pace, with
Bernie Blunt III scoring early with a layup. The team capitalized on turnovers and fast breaks, with
Mykolas Ivanauskas and
Jake Lemelman assisting on several scoring plays. The Green and Blue's defense was effective, forcing seven turnovers and blocking two shots.
As the half progressed, the Lakers maintained a steady scoring rate, highlighted by Blunt's consistent shooting, including two 3-pointers.
Christian Gamble added to the score with a crucial 3-pointer with 2:12 remaining. Mercyhurst concluded the half on a strong note, leading 50–36.
The second half began with the Lakers extending their lead through consistent offensive execution. Ivanauskas and
Qadir Martin were pivotal, with Ivanauskas converting a layup at 19:25 and Martin contributing a series of baskets and rebounds throughout the half. The Lakers maintained control, highlighted by a robust defensive presence that yielded 19 rebounds.
The Red Flash attempted to close the gap with free throws and layups, but Mercyhurst's steady scoring, including a 3-pointer by
Kaden Fuhrmann at 2:32, kept the host team at bay. Blunt's free throws in the final minute secured the advantage. The half concluded with the Lakers leading 94–79, maintaining their strong position.
Blunt III scored 31 points and added eight rebounds, including three 3-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Martin posted 23 points and collected three blocks while shooting 10 of 11 from the field. Lemelman contributed with 12 points, six assists, and two steals.
Deshaun Jackson Jr. tallied eight points and four assists, converting all four field goal attempts.
Mercyhurst has a record of 13-14 overall and 8-6 in NEC play. SFU is now 6-20 overall and 4-9 in NEC competition.
The Lakers will come back home Thursday, February 19, as they take on Wagner.
