HACKENSACK, N.J. — Mercyhurst lost to FDU 3-0 on Friday. The Lakers were held to 27 kills and a .045 hitting percentage, with set scores of 17-25, 20-25 and 17-25.
The Lakers started with answers from
Roslyn Guerra and a
Julia Shepherd block, moving in front 3-1, and
Sydney Forcht later served an ace as the Lakers went ahead 7-6. The Lakers continued to get production from Guerra,
Mia Mattingly and Shepherd, and the visitors put together a late push after facing set point at 24-13. Forcht served the Lakers through four straight points, including a Mattingly kill, two Shepherd kills and a block by Mattingly and Shepherd, before FDU closed the set 25-17.
Mercyhurst opened the second set with four straight points on
Alyssa Krause's serve, getting kills from
Anna Logan,
Kelsie Gaiter-Davis, Shepherd and
Ava Carney to build a 4-0 lead. FDU answered and moved in front 6-5, but Shepherd tied the set with a kill before Mercyhurst later drew even again at 10-10 during
Madison Miner's service turn. FDU created separation from there, using a stretch from 10-10 to 14-10 and later pushing the margin to 17-11. The Lakers responded with points that included a Shepherd kill to get back within 17-14, and late kills from Miner, Shepherd and Mattingly kept the set moving, but FDU finished the set 25-20.
Mercyhurst spent the third set working from behind after FDU built advantages of 8-2 and 12-4, with Guerra and Carney supplying early kills off Krause assists. The Lakers' clearest response came with Krause serving, as two FDU attack errors, a Shepherd-Carney block and Carney kill moved the score to 14-10. Shepherd added kills at 17-11 and 18-13, but FDU pushed the margin back out to 24-14.
Sarah Barnum answered with a late kill during a three-point Lakers push, before Mila Samardzija closed the set for FDU's 25-17 finish.
Shepherd led the Lakers with 10 kills, hit .286 and added three total blocks for 12 points. Krause finished with a team-high 15 assists and added eight digs. Guerra recorded seven kills and two digs. Gaiter-Davis converted her lone attack and collected six digs.
The Lakers will return to the court on Saturday, Oct. 3 when they take on FDU. Coverage is set to begin at 1 p.m.
