CHICAGO — The Mercyhurst men's basketball team fell to Chicago State 78-74 in a closely contested NEC matchup on Saturday at the Emil and Patricia Jones Convocation Center. The Lakers (11-12, 6-4 NEC) were led by a strong second-half effort, scoring 44 points after trailing by five at halftime. Chicago State (3-19, 1-8 NEC) capitalized on free throws, making 19 of 30 attempts, to seal the win.
The Lakers began the half with consistent offensive pressure, highlighted by a 3-pointer from
Jake Lemelman to take an early lead at 16:50.
Qadir Martin contributed with key defensive plays, including a block and defensive rebound, aiding the Green and Blue in maintaining the momentum. A fast break layup by
James Thomas extended the lead to 22–18 with 6:08 remaining.
Despite a strong start, the Lakers faced a series of challenges as Chicago State responded with a scoring run. Mercyhurst managed to keep close with contributions from
Bernie Blunt III and
Deshaun Jackson Jr., who hit crucial shots to sustain the team's competitiveness. The half closed with the Lakers trailing 35–30 after Chicago State hit a late 3-pointer.
Mercyhurst opened the second half with a strong offensive presence, narrowing Chicago State's lead with effective scoring in the paint.
Mykolas Ivanauskas and Martin contributed key layups, supported by Blunt's assists, keeping the score competitive.
A series of fast-break points and defensive stops allowed the Lakers to maintain pressure.
Kaden Fuhrmann and Lemelman hit critical 3-pointers, momentarily tying the game. Despite efforts from Chicago State to extend their lead, Mercyhurst kept the contest within reach, closing the half with a narrow 44-43 advantage over their opponents.
Lemelman led the Lakers with 21 points, connecting on nine field goals and dishing out seven assists. Martin contributed 19 points and added three blocks while securing eight rebounds. Blunt posted eight assists and tallied nine points, including one 3-pointer. Ivanauskas scored eight points and pulled down five rebounds.
The Lakers hold an 11-12 overall record and are 6-4 in NEC play. Chicago State stands at 3-19 overall and 1-8 in NEC competition.
The Lakers will be back in action Thursday in Erie to faceoff against SFU at 7:00 p.m.
