STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Mercyhurst men's basketball team (7-10, 2-2 NEC) narrowly defeated Wagner (6-9, 1-3 NEC) 70-69 at the Spiro Sports Center Athletic Complex on Saturday.
Bernie Blunt III led the Lakers scoring 23 points and shooting 50% from the field and making 10-10 free throws. The game was marked by a dramatic finish, with the Lakers securing the win with a one-point margin. Key contributions included Mercyhurst's 17 points from turnovers, while Wagner's 10 successful 3-pointers kept the contest close throughout. The teams were tied at halftime, but the Lakers edged the Seahawks in the second half to secure their second conference win 70-69.
The Lakers began the first half with a balanced attack, with
Christian Gamble opening the scoring with a 3-pointer at 18:50. The team capitalized on defensive stops, including six steals, to disrupt Wagner's rhythm. Blunt and
Jake Lemelman contributed crucial baskets, with Lemelman hitting back-to-back 3-pointers at 7:23 and 6:33, pushing the Green and Blue ahead.
Despite Wagner's persistent counterattacks, including a 3-pointer by Nick Jones in the final seconds, Mercyhurst maintained composure. The half concluded with a 32–32 tie, setting the stage for a competitive matchup as both teams showcased their scoring ability and defensive efforts.
Mercyhurst's second half was marked by strategic plays and crucial scoring. The team efficiently capitalized on opportunities in the paint, with
Mykolas Ivanauskas contributing significantly with both offensive rebounds and points. Blunt's timely free throws and a 3-pointer in the last minutes were pivotal, turning the tide in Mercyhurst's favor.
Despite Wagner's attempts to pull ahead, the Lakers maintained composure and executed key defensive stops, including several blocks by
Qadir Martin who tallied six in the win. The half concluded with Mercyhurst slightly outscoring Wagner, 38-37, to lead 70-69 at the end of the game.
Blunt led the team with 23 points, converting all 10 of his free throw attempts and recording six field goals. Martin posted 11 points and dominated defensively with six blocks.
Sean Lang contributed with eight rebounds and three steals.
Deshaun Jackson Jr. added nine points, making three of his four free throw attempts.
Mercyhurst holds a record of 7-10 overall and 2-2 in NEC play. Wagner now stands at 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the NEC.
The Lakers will be back in action Saturday, January 17 at home as they host Stonehill.
