Lakers Fall in Tournament Doubleheader

The Mercyhurst volleyball team dropped both matched of the second day of the Mercyhurst Invitational. The Lakers fell to Saint Peter's in four sets and pushed game two against Holy Cross to five sets, but came up short. 

Game One
 
The Lakers lost in four sets, winning the first one 25-23, then losing 25-21, 26-24, and 25-21 to the Peacocks.
 
The game began with the Lakers scoring off an ace from Sydney Forcht. From there, both teams went back and forth, trading points and going on streaks. Eventually, a ball-handling error from St. Peters led to the Lakers winning the set. Roslyn Guerra, Sarah Barnum, Andrea Zaric, Payton Melin, Julia Shepherd and Kaitlin Murphy contributed kills to help the Lakers' offense.
 
In the second set, the Lakers were more efficient with a .370 hitting percentage. Throughout this set, Alia Mastromatteo and Alyssa Krause continued to display their playmaking abilities, tallying seven assists a piece.
 
In the third set, a kill from Shepherd got the Lakers on the board first with a kill. Following that was an ace from Anna Logan. The Lakers took advantage of the service errors that St. Peters created. It was a back and forth battle the whole way, but the Lakers could not hold on.
 
In the fourth set, the Lakers were able to develop streaks to keep themselves in the game. The Lakers' first streak was four consecutive points due to a kill from Madison Miner, an ace from Krause and two attack errors from St. Peters. The second one was from points 12-16, with two kills coming from Shepherd and more errors from the Peacocks. The Lakers fought hard but could not come back.
 
Game Two
 
The Lakers lost in five sets, winning the first one 25-22, losing the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-21, winning 25-18 in set four, and losing set five 15-12 to the Crusaders.
 
In the first set, the Lakers went back-and-forth with Holy Cross. The first point came for the Lakers was a kill that came from Murphy. Towards the end the set, the Lakers went on an 8-2 run, which would help them close out the first set. They also held Holy Cross to a .143 hitting percentage.
 
In the second set, the defense of the Lakers was displayed. Blocks came from Murphy, Melin, and Shepherd. 
 
In the third set, the Lakers continued displaying their both their offense and their defense. On the offensive side, the Lakers were able to rally 14 kills. Defensively, they limited Holy Cross to just a .118 hitting percentage, their lowest of the match.
 
In the fourth set, the Lakers recovered from the last two sets, securing a victory and forcing a fifth  set. In the fourth, they were more aggressive with a .441 hitting percentage, their highest of the game. Towards the end of the set, the Lakers went on a 6-0 run with a kill from Andrea Zaric to close it out.
 
In the fifth set, the Lakers battled hard, but in the end, they were not able to complete the comeback.
 
The Lakers continue the season at the Binghamton Invitational matching up against Binghamton on Sept. 12 at 10:00 a.m
