The Lakers opened the 2025 campaign on the road at Youngstown State last Thursday, falling 24-15 in a hard-fought battle. Mercyhurst went down 21-7 in the first half, but stellar defense play to start the second half helped the Lakers gain momentum. Mercyhurst pulled within nine with seven game information minutes to play in the fourth quarter off of a Dylan Evans touchdown and 2-point conversion. However, a costly turnover on the next Lakers possession allowed YSU to take a 24-15 victory in the season opener at Stambaugh Stadium.

Mercyhurst quarterback Adam Urena completed 32-of-48 passes and two touchdowns. Evans was the main target for Urena, as the redshirt sophomore transfer from New Hampshire caught seven passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Jeff Leavell led the way with nine tackles while Corey Cobb Jr. recorded his first career sack.

New Haven started the season at Marist last Saturday, falling 31-14. Quarterback AJ Duffy was named the NEC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance, tallying 377 passing yards, two touchdowns.

The contest will not count against the NEC record for Mercyhurst.
