#5/6 Minnesota Duluth Takes Series Over Women’s Hockey

ERIE, Pa.–Today marked game two of Mercyhurst's first series of the season. The game reached its climax in the second period, when six goals were scored. UMD eventually added to their lead in the third and defeated the Lakers 5-3.

The first period saw relentless pressure from the Bulldogs, with multiple attempts thwarted by the Laker's defense and Magdalena Luggin. Most of the first half was back-and-forth, similar to yesterday. The Lakers capitalized on a crucial opportunity late in the period when Sofia Nuutinen scored the first goal at the 19:17 mark, assisted by Julia Perjus and Maja Alenius

The second period was rather eventful, with six goals scored between both teams. It commenced with the Lakers demonstrating control in the faceoff circle, winning six consecutive faceoffs. UMD initially took the lead at 18:58, but Perjus responded with a crucial equalizer at 12:16, assisted by Makayla Javier and Alenius. Perjus continued to make an impact on the game, this time on a power play, netting another goal at 6:20 with the assistance of Nayeon Kim and Nuutinen. This was Perjus' third point of the game and gave the Lakers the lead. However, the Bulldogs managed to reclaim the advantage, concluding the period with a 4-3 lead for the visitors.

The third period opened with Regina Metzler winning the faceoff for the Lakers, setting the tone for an intense frame. Metzler went on to finish the game with a game-high 72% faceoff percentage. On one end of the ice, Payten Evans made a pair of crucial blocks to momentarily fend off the Bulldogs. On the other end, Julia Schalin and Metzler fired multiple shots on frame. UMD eventually extended their lead at 11:20 after stopping every effort from Mercyhurst. The Lakers continued to apply pressure, but the Bulldog defense held them off to win 5-3.

The Lakers' next series will begin Thursday, Nov. 25 at New Hampshire.
