Youngstown, OH – The Mercyhurst Softball team took a short trip to Youngstown State University for a Tuesday doubleheader. The Penguins made it a difficult afternoon for the Lakers as they won both matchups before the seventh inning, 10-2 and 8-0, respectively.
Game One
The first game of the evening resulted in YSU taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The first run was scored by Bree Kohler on a fielding error and the next was scored by Lydia Wilkerson off of a sacrifice bunt.
The Lakers answered right away in the top of the second.
Cameryn Mullaly hit a fly ball out to centerfield on a full count which sacrificed an out for
Lauren Henrich to score.
Bailey Cannon then scored on the next at bat for the Lakers on a wild pitch and it quickly became a 3-2 game. However, once Elyssa Imler hit a home run in the bottom of the third, the Penguins ran away with the game. They scored seven unanswered points from the bottom of the second up until the run-rule in the bottom of the sixth as they took game one 10-2.
Game Two
The second game was at a deadlock until Ayla Ray hit a single that brought in two batters for YSU. The Lakers were unable to get things going or get anything on the board. Meanwhile, the Penguins bats really came alive in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Truran hit a home run to left center field and from there, YSU added five more runs over the next two innings to win game two 8-0. Kelsey Ogin had eight strikeouts and allowed just two hits in what ended up being a frustrating outing for the Lakers.
