Softball Falls in Pair of Games at Canisius

Buffalo, NY – The Mercyhurst Softball team traveled up I-90 to play Canisius University for a double header. The Golden Griffins ended up taking game one 10-0 and game two 9-0.

Game One
Eliza Reynolds recorded the first hit of the game in the top of the first with a single to left field. The inning ended with Canisius' Liv Herrington striking out Bailey Cannon. This saved a couple potential runs because Jazlynn Sanders was on third and Eliza Reynolds was on second. The Golden Griffins scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Ella Johel hit a triple that allowed Alyssa Cloutier to reach home. Rosie Gomez then hit a single to bring in Johel and the Griffs were up 2-0 early on. Alexa North struck out Natalie Quonce to prevent any further damage as the Griffs had a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Vivi Vargas hit a ground rule double for the Griffs. Alexa North struck out Alyssa Cloutier and Tabitha von Kolen back-to-back. However, Ella Johel hit a single that brought Vargas home and extended their lead to four. The bottom of the third was when the Griffs started to run away with the game. This is because Vivi Vargas hit a three-run bomb to left field.

Emelie Pascual singled past the shortstop in the top of the fourth. However, the Canisius infield was not allowing the Lakers to get anything going beyond that. The Golden Griffins added to their tally in the bottom of the fourth to make it 10.  The Lakers were unable to prevent the run-rule as Canisius took game one.

Game Two
The Lakers had their top of the order retired in quick succession to begin game two. Lauren Henrich was in the circle for the Lakers to start the bottom of the first. Tabitha von Kolen scored the first run early on. Then, Henrich struck out Bailey Alatorre swinging to close the inning with two runners on base.

Cameryn Mullaly hit a triple to left center field in the top of the third that had the Laker dugout ecstatic. However, Olivia Manchester struck out Jenna Wojtkowiak and Alexandra Acosta-Reyes to prevent the Lakers from getting on the board. Rosie Gomez layed down a bunt that resulted in a heads-up play by Lolo Henrich and Aly Acosta-Reyes to prevent a run. However, the Griffs tried again, this time with Cara Edwards, and the sacrifice bunt was successful. After a couple more runs, Vivi Vargas hit her second three-run home run of the afternoon to extend the lead to seven. The final score after five innings was 9-0 in favor of Canisius.
